Scientific activity

One of the first scientific directions, which was founded by the Full Professor Bruk A.S., was “Research of properties of coke”. Within the framework of development of this direction the well-known methods of estimation of quality of coke were improved, new installations for the study of physical and physical and chemical properties and developed methods of control and management of technology of coking were created. Within the framework of this direction senior research worker, Doctor of Science, Full Professor Pinchuk S.I. Full Professor Goncharov V.F. actively worked and successfully developed the scientific direction concerning the receipt of new types of metallurgical fuel and improvement of the dry extinguishing of coke.

Scientific research in coal source of raw materials of coking branch expansion is traditional for the Department activity. Collective of employees of branch laboratory of “Coking and dry extinguishing of coke” headed by Doctor of Science, Full Professor A.G. Starovoit, developed theoretically grounded ways and methods of control of dry cooling of coke, carried out the original researches of physical and chemical properties of coke and process of utilizing of coke heat.

Important achievements in the scientific and scientific-pedagogical activity:

1) Development of technology of receipt of the shaped ore-carbonic materials;

2) Creation of the complex vehicle on determination of quality of blast-furnace coke;

3) Development of the dilatometric method of control of coal baking;

4) Development of zondic methods of control of electric resistance of coke;

5) Development of the contact free checking systems of technological parameters and quality of coal charge and coke.

Two editions of the textbook “Technology of coke-chemistry production” by Leybovich R.E. and others, monographs: “Ore-carbon materials” by Goncharov V.F. and others; “Dilatometric aspect of coals, applied for coking” by Obuhovskiy Ya.M., Sheyhet A.M., Goldberg P.Ya.; “Application of radioisotope technique in the coke and chemical production” by Pinchuk S.I. and others.

Basic directions of scientific activity, leaders, their co-ordinates:

- Research of properties of coal and blast-furnace coke, with the purpose of expansion of coal source of raw materials of coking and improvement of technology and production control of coke (Prof. Starovoit A.G., Associate Professor Kompaniets V.A.);

- Development of new technologies of production of coke, other carbonic and ore-carbonic materials for the blast-furnace users (Prof. Kutovoy P.M., Associate Professor Kompaniets V.A.);

- Utilization of industrial wastes for the improvement of technology of production and quality of basic products of coke and electrode productions (Prof. Starovoit A.G., Associate Prof. Maliy E.I., Associate Prof. Sorokin E.L.);

- Improvement of technology and equipment of options of dry extinguishing of coke installations (Prof. Starovoit A.G.).

The seminar “Modern technologies of processing of hard fuels fossil” is constantly functioning at the Department; where the results of scientific researches in coke and chemical production are discussed.

Now 5 Postgraduates of the MFR Department take post-graduate course, each student has a supervisor of studies Full Professor Starovoit A.G. Research works of post-graduate students deal with the decision of actual technological tasks ofcoke and chemicaland electrode production, active additions usage for the improvement of the quality ofcoke and chemicalproduction.

The Department participates in annual international scientific conference “Young academy”, where the students of speciality “Chemical technology of fuel and carbon materials” give reports dealing with their scientific research. Every two years the Allukrainian scientific conference of students and young of scientists “Improvement of technology of coking as a factor of development of metallurgy and energy” is held on the base of the Department.

Presently the Department has permanent integration ties with the research workers of many Departments NMetAU among which the Department of “Theory of metallurgical processes” (head, Prof. Kamkina L.V.), “The Chemical technology of ceramics and refractories (head as. Prof. Pilipchatin L.D.), “The Electrometallurgy of steel and ferro-alloys” (head academician Gasik M.I.), “The Metallurgy of cast-iron” (head, Prof. Tarakanov A.K.).

In addition the Department supports permanent scientific ties with the main research institute of industry – UKhIN (director, Doctor of Science Kovalev E.T.).

Full Professor Starovoit A.G. and Full Professor Barskiy V.D. are the members of scientific council of defence of dissertations, which operates on the base of UKhIN.
