     In Ukraine, on Saturday, commemorate the victims of famine. National commemorative events will begin in Kiev at 15.20 near the Holodomor Memorial. At 4.00 pm a national minute of silence will begin, during which Ukrainians are urged to light candles near the memorials of the famines or on the windowsills of their homes.

     According to the Ptukha Institute of Demography and Social Research, the loss of population in Ukraine due to supermortality during the Holodomor in the 1930s ranged from 3 to 6 million people.

     On November 28, 2006, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted the law “On the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine,” according to which the Holodomor was recognized as genocide of the Ukrainian people. According to Ukrainian legislation, “public denial of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 in Ukraine is recognized as an outrage upon the memory of the millions of victims of the Holodomor, the humiliation of the dignity of the Ukrainian people and is illegal.”
