You can even be brave during the war.
I wish for you to be happy and smile,
Don’t care about anything, a man will care.
He will protect you always, not for a while,
Have a good health and white heart forever.

Wonderful day, the eighth of March,
Like the anthem of female beauty,
Flowers, smiles, mood will be touched,
To fulfill the desires of women is our main duty!
Much depends on the birth of a woman,
She carries heat into the heart of man.
Beautiful creature of the planet Earth,
As a guiding star for reaching a new secret land.

International Women's Day is the world day of women, which also celebrates the achievements of women in the political, economic and social fields, celebrates the past, present and future of women on the planet.

The holiday is celebrated by the United Nations, and in countries such as Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Russia, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, this day is a national holiday.

History of occurrence

Like May 1, March 8 grew out of the labor movement and has American roots. There is an opinion that the first ever "march of empty pots" of textile workers in New York, which took place on March 8, 1857, became one of the prerequisites for the celebration of International Women's Day.

In 1908, 15,000 women in New York demonstrated for shorter hours, higher wages, and the right to vote (in most states, women gained it in 1920, when the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was passed). The following year, the American Socialist Party proposed that the last Sunday in February be Labor Women's Day.

Interestingly, the idea of holding International Women's Day first arose precisely at the beginning of the 20th century, when the industrialized world was going through a period of expansion and upheaval, a population boom and the emergence of radical ideologies. In August 1910, the Second International Conference of Working Women took place in Copenhagen. The leader of the women's group of the Social Democratic Party of Germany Clara Zetkin put forward the idea of celebrating International Women's Day. She suggested that Women's Day should be celebrated annually in every country on the same day. The purpose of this holiday Zetkin called the struggle of women for equality and emancipation.

In 1911, it was first celebrated in Germany, Austria-Hungary, Denmark and Switzerland. The first Women's Day celebration in Germany took place on March 19 to commemorate the March Revolution of 1848 in Prussia. Then Women's Day in different countries was celebrated on March 2, 9 and 12, as well as on May 2 and 12.

The date of March 8 came to the international left movement from Russia. In 1917, on this day (February 23, old style), a strike of workers of weaving factories of the Vyborg side in Petrograd began with the demands of "Bread and Peace!", which grew into a revolution. In the early years of Soviet power, Vyborg weavers were widely celebrated as pioneers in the overthrow of tsarism. Subsequently, the February Revolution was in the shadow of the Bolshevik October Revolution, and this circumstance was not emphasized in the USSR.

The official status of "International Women's Day" this holiday acquired by decision of the UN in 1975, and since then it has been celebrated by the UN annually asthe International Day for Women's Rights and International Peace and every year is dedicated to a specific topic.

On this day, women of all continents, often separated by national borders or ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, have the opportunity to come together and remember a tradition that represents at least several decades of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

In ancient Greece, Lysistrata organized a sex strike against men to end the war; during the French Revolution, Parisian women who advocated "liberty, equality and fraternity" organized a march on Versailles to demand women's suffrage.

International Women's Day is a celebration of all women who have become history makers. Not surprisingly, women have been pioneers in many areas.

Here are just some of the facts, united by the female "first":

in January 1906, the first higher technical educational institution for women in Russia was opened in St. Petersburg;

in January 1909, the world's first women's auto race started in New York;

In May 1989, the first performance of the female Vivaldi Orchestra took place.

International Women's Day is a great occasion to remind the world of the need for gender equality.

Purple (or magenta) is often referred to as the color of International Women's Day, as it symbolizes dignity and justice, as well as green - hope, white - purity. They were proposed as a symbol of the struggle for equality by the British Women's Social and Political Union in 1908.

How is March 8 celebrated in different countries?

In Ukraine, March 8 was a day off before the war with Russia. Women were given gifts and flowers - in the three or four days preceding the holiday, their sales doubled.

In China, the working day for women lasts four hours instead of eight, but this recommendation of the PRC State Council is not a law, and some employers do not follow it.

In Italy, mimosa flowers are given to women on March 8. This custom originated in Rome shortly after World War II, its source is unknown.

For many, the holiday of March 8 is associated with mimosa.

In the US, March is considered Women's History Month. Each year, the president delivers a statement honoring the achievements and contributions of American women.

Celebration or protest?

In the United States, for the first time in history, a woman and a representative of the colored population, Kamala Harris, became the vice president. The election of Kamala Harris to the post of vice president of the United States was greeted as a great victory for the women's movement.

In 2019, a coalition government was formed in Finland with five women at the head. Northern Ireland has legalized abortion. Sudan has repealed a law that dictated in detail how women should dress and behave in public.

Finally, the #MeToo movement, which emerged in 2017, continues to be a global force in the fight against unacceptable sexual harassment and has resulted in the conviction of a number of perpetrators.

The organizers of the celebration of International Women's Day in 2021 chose the hashtag #ChooseToChallenge as its motto. The main idea is that the world challenges a person and everyone is personally responsible for their choices. "We can all accept the challenge and speak out about gender prejudice and inequality. We can all look for and celebrate women's achievements. We can work together to create a fairer world," the organizers said in a statement. "Gender equality will not be achieved for another hundred years," said the statement of the organizers of the celebration. "None of us and, most likely, almost none of our children will live to see it."

According to the UN Women program, the coronavirus pandemic has nullified 25 years of struggle for gender equality. Because of lockdowns, women around the world have to do more work at home, they lose career and educational opportunities.

On International Women's Day, protest marches demanding equality take place in many countries.

They were mostly peaceful, but in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek, the police detained several dozen activists, and before that, according to reports, they were attacked by unknown masked men.

The detention of women's rights activists in Kyrgyzstan during the 2020 march was another reminder of the importance of such a struggle. The situation with women's rights in the country is deteriorating, public figures say.

In Pakistan, demonstrations in a number of cities took place amid threats of violence and criminal prosecution.

In Mexico City, an 80,000-strong demonstration against violence against women ended in clashes with the police. Someone started throwing gasoline bottles at the guards, who responded with tear gas. About 60 people were injured.

Women’s Day

The 8-th of March is Women’s Day —
So bright and warm and smart.
This day the women are like fays.
With love, support in heart.
Who are the women nowadays?
They are like sunny light.
Let all your life be full of sweets,
And shine as moon night.

William Shakespeare

 My love is strength'ned, though more weak in seeming;

I love not less, though less the show appear:

That love is merchandised whose rich esteeming

The owner's tongue doth publish every where.

Our lovewas new, and then but in the spring,

When I was wont to greet it with my lays,

As Philomel in summer's front doth sing,

And stops his pipe in growth of riper days:

Not that the summer is less pleasant now

Than when her mournful hymns did hush the night,

But that wild music burthens every bough,

And sweets grown common lose their dear delight.

Therefore like her, I sometime hold my tongue,

Because I would not dull you with my song.
