History Department

By the decree of the State committee on a science and technics in January, 1944 in Dnepropetrovsk metallurgical institute had been formed chemistry-technological faculty in which structure by the same decree it has been defined two specialities: “Chemistry of pirogennih processes” (Cokechemistry) and "Firestop". On March, 14th for preparation of experts-cokechemists the department of Chemical technology of firm fuel which has begun has been created is high-grade to function since September, 1st, 1945. Later the department has received the name of Metallurgical fuel and reducers.

 Metallurgical fuel and reducers department of NMetAU – the leading scientific and educational center on preparation of experts cokechemical manufactures. Traditions of department were put by its founders – senior lecturer I.M.Khanin and professor A.S.Brook. Their essence is deep scientific research of actual problems of cokechemistry as component of metallurgical manufactures on which base educational process is under construction and preparation of engineers and experts of the top skills is conducted.

 The first department manager senior lecturer I.M.Khanin known because of the works in the field of modeling of heating system coke of furnaces was managing. During the period from 1948 till 1975 department headed d.t.s., professor A.S.Brook – the large expert in the field of studying of properties metallurgical coke. From 1975 till 1997 department supervised d.t.s., professor V.F.Goncharov who successfully developed a scientific direction on reception of new kinds of metallurgical fuel and perfection of dry suppression of coke. Since 1997 a management of chair has accepted д.т.н., senior lecturer V.M.Egorov. Since 2002 department heads by d.t.s., professor Starovojt A.G.

 One of the first scientific directions, which professor A.S.Brook has based, is research properties of coke. For development of this direction, important not only for cokechemists, but also for metallurgists, at factory of G.I.Petrovsky the experimental station on test of properties of coke has been constructed and the aerodynamic method of an estimation of gas permeability of bulk weights metallurgical fuel is created.

 Development of this scientific direction went by some ways. Known methods of an estimation of quality of coke were improved, new installations for studying of a material of coke, wich have no cracks, for definition chemical activity bulk weights of metallurgical fuel and its electroresistance were created. Within the limits of it direction actively worked the senior research assistant, c.t.s. S.I.Pinchuk. Under its management and at it direct participation researches on application of radio isotope technics in cokechemical manufacture, on increase efficiency process cokings of layers, on creation of controllable technology of coking were conducted. Received results took root at many factories of the branch and have found reflection in three monographies prepared by S.I.Pinchuk. In different years employees of the MTV department, working in it scientific direction, it is protected five master's theses (S.I.Pinchuk, G.I.Kuchmy, A.JA.Lazarenko, A.D.Dzhigota, A.V.Ostapchenko).

 For department activity scientific direction researches in expansions area of a coal raw-material base of coking are traditional. This, always actual for cokechemistry a problem, fruitfully was engaged d.t.n., professor A.M.Obuhovsky. For reception of the new information about conglomerate coals, for an estimation of their technological properties and, especially, properties of coals of the Western Donbass which has roughly developed in 60th the technique has been offered, dilatometer IGI-DMetI is developed and serially made. This device has entered into practice of researches of coals at many factories of branch, wide is applied by Institute of combustible minerals АН of Russia, in Ukrainian and East coalchemical institutes. Experience of its operation and the analysis of possibilities of the offered method have been generalized in JA.M.Obuhovsky, A.M.Shejheta and P.Ja.Goldberg's monography "Dilatometrija of the coals applied to coking" which has been published in 1967 by publishing house "Metallurgy". Later the research possibilities of dilatometer IGI-DMetI have been expanded thanks to works scientific employees, c.t.s. A.M.Shejheta and V.F.Ilyin.

 In 70th for increase of level of researches in the field of preparation of coals for coking, for strengthenings and developments of scientific and educational base department branch laboratory MCHM USSR "Coking and dry suppression of coke" has been created. Laboratory during the various periods of its activity had managed by d.t.n., professor A.M.Obuhovsky, c.t.s., the senior research assistant V.M.Chuchminov, d.t.n., prof. A.G.starovojt, d.t.n., prof. V.F.Goncharov.

The considerable contribution to a solution of a problem of application coals of the Western Donbass for manufacture of metallurgical coke was brought by professor V.F.Gonkcharov. He was engaged in technology studying production the formed metallurgical coke and toplivno-melting materials from the coals extracted in the first mines of new pool. Employees of depertment under its management took part in the first in world practice skilled smelts on the formed coke in domain shop of factory of G.I.Petrovsky, and also in manufacture of different electroferroalloys on a new kind of raw materials. On these subjects preparation of theses and projects was conducted, have been protected doctor's and four master's theses. In 1980 publishing house "Technics" has published the monography prepared by V.F.Goncharovym, Z.I.Bezbahom, P.M.Kutovym and V.M.Egorovym "Rudno-carbonaceous materials" where scientific bases and technology of new progressive process have been stated. Thereby the contribution to development of methods of reception of special kinds of coke for not domain manufactures has been made.

 The department also solved difficult complex problems which were put by the higher organizations with success. So, in 1977 was received the task from MCHM USSR on the organization and filling of works in the field of perfection of process and installations of dry suppression of coke (USTC).

As USTC represent difficult enough power technological installations, the complex creative group from employees various departments has been created: metallurgical fuel and reducers, industrial power system, the mechanical equipment of metallurgical  factories, automation of productions, electrical engineers, chemical technology of ceramics and fireemphasis, a labor safety and safety precautions. Except technological questions it was necessary to coordinate work of other divisions, to direct it on achievement of the general positive result.

 Professor V.F.Goncharov was the supervisor of studies of this theme throughout all period. The collective of employees of branch laboratory under the direction of A.G.Starovojta has theoretically proved ways and ways of management of dry cooling of coke, has conducted original researches of physical and chemical properties of coke and process of recycling of heat. By results of workings out have been protected some dissertations, including A.G.Starovojta's thesis for a doctor's degree. It and the senior research assistant V.A.Anisimov have been invited in the Peoples Republic of China for consultations the Chinese experts in dry suppression of coke.

In 90th of the last century when socioeconomic processes have led to requirement decrease in domain coke, and also to short shipments of coals for coking, the department has joined in a solution of a problem of conversion of liberated oven fund cokechemical branches. It was offered to reorient a part of coke furnaces on coking coals together with substances another nature. So, for the first time as the organic additives coked together with coal shihts, firm thermoplastic polymers regulary structures and their products thermal destruction are considered. Works in this direction important prirodno-security value, as high rates of increase of manufacture of plastics have generated an acute problem of recycling and destruction of a polymeric waste which represent ecologically dangerous materials. This problem carries global character.

 On the basis of SRW, carried out on department of metallurgical fuel and reducers technological, ecological and economic aspects of such approach to conversion of the oven equipment are studied. Possibility considerably is shown to improve position with recycling of polymeric waste in Pridneprovsky region. For this purpose it is offered to spend gathering and crushing of a polymeric waste which then without otmivki and sortings will be processed together with coal shihtoy in furnaces of layern coking process in big cities.

On scales, presence of perfect systems of catching of flying products of coking and clearing sewage of cokechemical industry is a unique technical complex, which is capable to utilize various decaying organic materials. Decrease in requirement for coke and deficiency of conglomerating coals do such direction of use of furnaces actual. Now are developed teoretical process bases, and technological practicability of offers and positive influence on a waste of polymers on an exit chemical products of cokings are proved by results of semiindustrial tests. Workings out were accepted to introduction at enterprises "Ukrcoks". By results of these researches the author given directions senior lecturer V.M.Egorov in 1997 has protected the thesis for a doctor's degree.

 The huge contribution to creation of the educational literature on cokechemical to manufacture has made c.t.s., senior lecturer R.E.Lejbovich. Thanking its work it has been published 5 textbooks and manuals in the co-authorship with other teachers of department, other high schools and workers of branch. In total department publishes 11 books. Among these editions the textbook “Technology of cokechemical manufactures” which has been published in Czechoslovakia. The manual "Calculations of coke furnaces and processes of coking with COMPUTER application" became an effective remedy of preparation of students at modern level.

On department the working model powerful coke batteries and USTC is created, the collection of models of the basic mashines, devices and elements of the oven equipment cokechemical manufacture is collected. Professor A.S.Brook has created in due time collection samples of combustible minerals and coking products. It constantly replenishes with new exhibits - various kinds of the formed coke and briquettes, rudno-carbonaceous and carbon materials.

 The department pays constant attention on performance student's research works. Students take part in scientific conferences which take place in NMetAU, and also in All Ukraine scientific conference of students and young scientists “Improvement of technology of coking as the factor of development of metallurgy and power” which carrying out is organized by department. The best students represent department on the All Ukraine Olympic Games on a speciality. The most prepared graduates have possibility to continue research activity, having arrived in postgraduate study.

Prominent feature developed on department school of thought cocechemists is close interaction with numerous scientific, design and branch work collectives. It is enough to tell that the number of technical officers on cokechemical enterprises of Ukraine under regular lists is made about 6,5 thousand people In formation of this mental potential of branch by chair took the most active part, having prepared for years of the existence more than 1100 engineers-koksohimikov, from them the honors degree was received by 190 persons. 11 graduates of chair successfully protected theses for a doctor's degree, more than 50 – became candidates of science.

 The main objective of work of department consists in increase of level of preparation of experts, before which activity big field at the industrial, design and scientific enterprises cokechemical branches.

Starovojt A.G. – d.t.s., the professor, managing chairs MTV, the general director of Ukrainian scientifically-industrial association "Ukrcoks", deputy Zhovtnevoj Are glad Dnepropetrovsk (1990 – 1994);

Pinchuk S.J. – d.t.s., the professor, the academician of Academy of Sciences of the higher school of Ukraine, the academician of the New York Academy of  Sciences, the honored worker of a science and technics of Ukraine, the manager of chair “Coverings, composite materials and protection of metals” NMetAU;

Zubilin I.G. – d.t.s., the professor, managing chairs “Technical chemistry” HENNA of V.N.Karazina, the leading research assistant of scientific research institute of chemistry, the main research assistant UHIN, the chief specialist of research department of Hyprocoke (Kharkov);
