November 27, the President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Boris Paton, turned 100 years old. Congratulations to the jubilee!
Boris Evgenievich is an outstanding scientist in the field of welding, metallurgy and metal technology, the organizer of science, state and public figure. President of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 1962) and the International Association of Academies of Sciences (since 1993), Director of the Institute of Electric Welding E.O. Paton of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (since 1953). Academician of NAS of Ukraine, a foreign member of the academies of sciences of many countries. Laureate of Lenin and State Prize, State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology, Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the Ukrainian SSR, twice Hero of Socialist Labor, Hero of Ukraine (1998). Fundamental research by B. E. Paton and his students about the interaction of welding sources with molten metal heating has laid the foundation for the creation of a new branch of metallurgy - special electrometallurgy. Thanks to it it became possible to cast specially clean special steels and alloys, non-ferrous metals, and obtain unique composite materials. Prospects for the creation of the latest structural and functional materials of the XXI century opened. He first began and developed research on the use of welding processes in space technology, performed by cosmonauts during orbital flights of ships and in open space.
